Our Philosophy

We believe in the right of all persons to live without fear, abuse, oppression and violence. We oppose all forms of dominance and violence over others. We believe in the need to change societal attitudes that encourage the abuse of power in order to control others.

We believe that work against societal violence must be achieved through networking locally as well as nationally, through direct services, community education and system advocacy.

We should be accountable to our communities, survivors from diverse groups and to their children. We believe services should always be accessible to and responsive to survivors from diverse groups, regardless of age, ethnicity, sexual preference, race, religion or differences in physical ability.

We believe ethical communication and a spirit of cooperation among advocates and programs are necessary to change social attitudes. Since the struggle of oppression is related to the struggle for empowerment, we are committed to maintaining a supportive, noncompetitive atmosphere in all aspects of our programs, so that open communication, respect, and cooperation will be encouraged among all members.

We believe batterers should be held accountable for their actions. We encourage the participation of all persons or groups who are committed to the struggle to end domestic violence.
